Description
Greenland has never had postage due stamps, but in 1970 the Dundas post office (whose service area included the Thule Air Base) introduced a distinctive postage due service. When inadequately franked mail arrived, a form was used to notify the addressee of mail being held pending the payment of postage due. When the addressee presented the form and paid the proper amount, regular stamps were affixed and tied. The addressee then was given the form as his receipt. We offer here the first of two types of these forms, which has five lines of text. It was used from January through May of 1970. The overall scheme was discontinued by November of 1970. The 1999 GF Greenland catalog prices this form at 250 Danish kroner (about $45.00). An elusive postal history item...
